Planet color vs quality

May I suggest exclusively using picture formats that include a color table and creating a variety of planet images with 3-4(or whatever) color IDs(or Colors) which are altered at the client end according to the planets qualities before being displayed. (rather like specifying the transparent color) Gible 04:39, 1 June 2007 (EDT)
I think that your suggestion is not mutually exclusive with any other solution. Every object has a media url, which could have a fragment identifier (ie #somelabel) to choose the colour id/colours used. The other thing to remember is that it's not just 2d (image) media, there is no reason why the media couldn't be a 3d mesh, a text file, or a audio file.
